National Police Week
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week that day falls in as National Police Week. National Police Week pays special recognition to the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The week recognizes their courage, honors their sacrifice, and pays tribute to their dedication to the safety and protection of others.
The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year.
More information can be found at the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial web site.
